According to Smashwords 2017 review, of the top 100 romance sellers, they have an average word count of 111,685. The average count for top-selling romance has risen above 100k, steadily since 2014, when it stood at 96k before.
The more experienced writers also often write longer books because their plots become more complicated and ambitious. This also tends to happen to series writers because they have more characters and plot threads to cover in later volumes.
